The Basilica and, even before, the station of the IV Cohort of Vigiles

The district takes its name from the monastery and church of San Saba, the only building in the area for several centuries even after the fall of the Roman Empire... , around was a countryside landscape. And just below the church were found the remains of aStation of the IV Cohort of Vigiles, these were, in ancient Rome, urban vigiles, their task in addition to extinguishing fires was that of law enforcement, especially at night. The whole area, including the current Aventine, was identified with the name Remuria, will be established Rione San Saba only in December 1921.

A district designed close to man

the social housing

The district was built from 1906 thanks to the new Institute of Social Housing, designed by Quadrio Pirani and Giovanni Bellucci. San Saba is still today considered one of the most successful examples of social housing on a human scale, populated by houses and buildings in brick curtain, apartments full of air and light, and tree-lined interior streets that flanking the slopes of the hill.

the courage of the righteous

Bruno Fantera, the righteous of San Saba

Immediately after the raid on the Jewish Ghetto of Rome, on October 16, 1946, the family of Gino Moscati - escaped the raids of the Nazi-fascists - began to wander around the city. After having placed the two daughters at the convent of nuns at the Roman Forum, Gino Moscati with his wife and two sons, Mino and Renato, knocked at the door of Bruno Fantera’s house in San Saba. Bruno and his mother do not hesitate for a moment and invite them to stay, presenting them to their neighbors as parents displaced from the Castelli Romani, thus saving them from deportation. For this reason, in 2008 Bruno is recognized "Righteous among the Nations".

out of fear.. out of love..

"I see now clear in the sad night..."

(from IL DOLORE, 1937-1946, ROME OCCUPIED. Giuseppe Ungaretti).

Rome, the eternal and cosmopolitan city, chaotic and beautiful, well here, in San Saba, time seems to stand still. Although this area is very central, a short distance from major attractions, this place retains a very strong local character. Villas and buildings of one or two floors, inner courtyards, greenery, ancient monasteries… the metaphysical atmosphere of San Saba are of timeless beauty. Giuseppe Ungaretti lived in Piazza Remuria at number 3 during the years of the German occupation. Here he composed a collection of poems dedicated to occupied Rome.
